Texas is an ideal place for a road trip. The state is vast, and there is much to see and do. And there is one attraction near San Antonio, Texas that would make an interesting addition – the world’s most haunted place.
The abandoned Yorktown Memorial Hospital was recently named the most haunted place on Earth by The Sun newspaper.
Located in Yorktown, 80 miles southeast of San Antonio, Texas, the hospital was founded in 1951 by a catholic group called the Felician Sisters. It served as a hospital until 1986, when it became a rehabilitation center for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse.
In 1992 the site was closed and left abandoned, where it has fallen into decay…and perhaps been taken over by ghosts.
A British photographer was recently allowed into the site and took some genuinely haunting photos. He said the whole experience was terrifying.
“I was given express permission to explore the hospital as long as I remembered to lock the gate afterwards. The hospital gave a few noises while I was inside. Doors slammed shut but that could have been wind, yet as the night drew near I think people may have snuck in. I began to hear whispers and loud bangs above and below and that’s when I decided I’d seen enough. Many have broken in before and stolen from the inside so eventually, they began to run tours for the paranormal upon request. I’ve been exploring abandoned buildings in the UK for 16 years, but nothing came close to this adventure – it was truly terrifying.”
Nearly 2000 people died at this hospital, and visitors report hearing their screams, wails, and even creaking wheelchairs when they visit the site. For those brave enough, the hospital offers the public both daytime tours and overnight investigations.
I’m not sure I am!
