911 CALL. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NORTH CAROLINIANS NOW HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE COVERAGE, ALL THANKS TO A MEDICAID EXPANSION THAT WENT INTO EFFECT TODAY. CHRIS PETERSEN JOINS US IN STUDIO THIS FRIDAY. CHRIS, STATE OFFICIALS ARE CELEBRATING THIS CHANGE. ABSOLUTELY, DEVANTE. IN A NEWS CONFERENCE THIS MORNING, NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ROY COOPER SAID A DREAM A DECADE IN THE MAKING HAS BECOME A REALITY. MORE THAN 600,000 UNINSURED IN OUR STATE WILL NOW BE ABLE TO RECEIVE HEALTH CARE. PEOPLE ARE EXTREMELY HAPPY. MEDICAID EXPANSION LAUNCHED IN NORTH CAROLINA ON FRIDAY, MEANING OVER 30,000 GUILFORD COUNTY RESIDENTS CAN SEE A DOCTOR. WE HAVE A COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT HAVEN’T HAD ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE IN MANY YEARS. AND SO NOW THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE THAT. AND SO THEY’RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. IT’S ALSO EXCITING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WORK AT THE GUILFORD COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. FOR YEARS, THEY’VE HEARD THE STORIES OF FOLKS IN DESPERATE NEED OF MEDICAL CARE TURNED AWAY BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T QUALIFY. WE JUST HAD A GENTLEMAN EARLIER THAT CAME IN. HE WAS ABLE TO GET HIS APPLICATION PROCESSED WHILE HE WAS HERE, AND HE NEEDED HEALTH CARE FOR A WHILE. AND HE ACTUALLY WAS WALKING OUT ALL SMILES, THANKED ALL OF US, AND WAS CALLING A FRIEND TO TELL THEM ABOUT IT. HEALTH CARE OFFICIALS SAY THE TIMING COULDN’T BE BETTER. THE WINTER MONTHS ARE PEAK FLU SEASON AND RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES FOR CHILDREN ARE ON THE RISE. WE HAVE KIDS THAT ARE GETTING RSV NOW, SO JUST BEING ABLE TO GO TO THE DOCTOR AND HAVE THAT PEACE OF MIND THAT YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE CHARGED A HUGE MEDICAL BILL THAT THAT THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THEM IN, SAID ABBY GILL WITH THE GUILFORD COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES SAYS A HIGH NUMBER OF COLLEGE STUDENTS, SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, ARE APPLYING IF THEY DIDN’T QUALIFY BEFORE THE EXPANSION AND SIMPLY WOULDN’T GO TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T AFFORD IT.
